Slice of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake up for auction

A slice of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake from their 1981 nuptials is being sold at auction.

The royal couple tied the knot 40 years ago, on 29 July, and a piece of its five-tier cake is expected to attract huge bids when a collector sells it next month (Aug21) with Gloucestershire, England-based auctioneer Dominic Winter.

"It's a curious and unique keepsake. I still wouldn't recommend eating it but after 40 years it's clearly destined to last," Chris Albruy, the auctioneer's royal memorabilia expert, told The Sun.

The slice is decorated with a red, blue and gold royal coat of arms.

It was given to Moyra Smith - one of the late Queen Mother's staff members at London's Clarence House - after the ceremony in 1981, and has been preserved in cling film inside a cake tin ever since.

The royal treat stayed in Moyra's family until 2008 before being acquired by the collector who is now putting it up for sale.

It appears to be the same slice as the one that went under the hammer in 2008, along with a personally signed letter to Moyra from Diana.

In 1998, a year after the Princess died tragically in a Paris, France road crash, a similar slice sold for $147,000 , according to Financial Express.
