More and more Kamloopsians registering their organ donor decision

An ICBC program aimed to boost the province’s organ donor list is working.

According to the auto insurer, more than 125,000 customers have registered with B.C. Transplant as potential donors since driver-licensing employees began asking customers to make their wishes known last year.

In Kamloops, there were 2,895 new registrations in 2017, up from 2016’s 1,752. (The data, which comes from other sources in addition to ICBC, does not indicate how a person registered, whether they answered yes or no to organ donation.)

B.C. Transplant says there are more than 1.2 million registered decisions in B.C.’s Organ Donor Registry.

Leanne Appleton, B.C. Transplant's provincial executive director, says a record 479 people received transplants last year.

A decal on your driver's licence is no longer enough to ensure you're registered as an organ donor.

Anyone interested in signing up can register either online with B.C. Transplant or at an ICBC licensing office.
