Kamloops Blazers lose to Giants in marathon shootout

It took an unlucky 13 rounds before Kaleb Bulych was finally able to break the tie and give the Vancouver Giants a 4-3 win shootout victory over the Kamloops Blazers.

The teams were knotted at three apiece after regulation and overtime, and Connor Zary scored on the Blazers’ second attempt to put them up in the shootout. But then Bowen Byram was able to match in the third round, which set off a streak of 19 straight misses by each team before Bulych finally ended it.

Kamloops Dylan Garand had 28 saves in regulation in his second straight start in net. David Tendeck had 27 for the Giants.

Zary had a shorthanded goal in the first period and Luc Smith added two of his own, including one on the power play that put the Blazers up 3-1 with five minutes left in the game. But Kamloops was unable to preserve the lead as David Koch got one back for Vancouver two minutes later.

Then, with the Giants’ net empty, Milos Roman slid the puck past Garant with 11 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

Despite the disappointing end result, the Blazers managed to pick up their first point in five games with the shootout loss.

The Blazers now head to Everett tonight to take on the Silvertips at 7:05 p.m.
