Sagebrush Theatre temporarily closed following 'serious structural issue'

The Sagebrush Theatre has temporarily shuttered its doors while it works to fix "urgently needed building repairs."

In a press release, Evan Klassen with Western Canada Theatre (WCT) says a serious structural issue was found in the roof of the audience chamber during a routine technical setup.

Sagebrush Theatre, which is co-owned by the school district and the City of Kamloops, is managed by WCT and is home to WCT productions and the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra.

"This has a double effect on us," says Klassen in an interview with KamloopsMatters.

Klassen says engineers are on site investigating the problem.

"We will be in touch with all our ticket holders in the coming days...to make alternate arrangements."

Klassen urges ticket holders not to contact the Kamloops Live! Box Office until after WCT staff have been in touch first.

As a result of the roof issue, WCT's current production of Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story has been moved to the Coast Kamloops Conference Centre's Theatre. The dates of the show are now Feb. 19 to 27.

"Events going forward, toward the end of April, are looking at other venue options," adds Klassen.

Art McDonald, the school district's director of facilities and transportation, says it was a WCT employee who noticed some cracking in the ceiling.

"The roof's structure is all timber frame and we've got one piece of one truss that has cracked; that's causing a piece of the roof to sag a bit," he says.

McDonald notes the challenge engineers face is the building itself. He says the trusses are very high off the ground and any working platform would be below the seating area of the theatre.

"It's just awkward in terms of what we have to do."

He couldn't give a timeline for when the building would reopen.
