The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack clawed their way back from a six-run deficit to beat Edmonton Collegiate 9-6 last night (May 9), for their first win in the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference (CCBC) Championship.
TRU drove in all nine runs in the last five innings of the game and were led by Liam Shibata, who went 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
“It was a dog fight,” Shibata, told TRU Athletics. “Coming into playoffs and being the higher seed we knew we had some pressure. Ray (Chadwick) told us to forget about what we did in the regular season (finish first) and concentrate on the game. Edmonton came out and battled us hard. Credit to them, they have really improved since we played them earlier. We are happy to get out of here with the win.”
Edmonton raced out to an early lead, getting five runs off WolfPack starter Joe Siniscalchi in the first three innings. Brandon Ludwig came out of the bullpen to settle things down but allowed an unearned run in the top of the fifth to extend Edmonton's lead.
Then the WolfPack bats woke up.
Taylor Van Ham got things started, scoring on a wild pitch. Then Shibata drove in three runs on a double and was brought home himself by a Cole Paquin single to tie things up after five innings.
TRU would take the lead on a Malik James RBI single in the sixth and add to two more runs to their lead in the seventh.
Then, they turned the mound over to their two aces: Tyler Hodder and Tyler Moskalyk pitched the final two innings to close things out. Hodder struck out three in the eighth and Moskalyk fanned two in the ninth to seal the victory.
With the win, the WolfPack set up a battle with Okanagan on Saturday (May 11) at 1 p.m. for a spot in the best-of-three finals. The loser of that game will still have a chance to make the finals, but will need to win another game to do so.

The CCBC Championship continues today, with the Vancouver Island University Mariners taking on the University of Fraser Valley Cascades at 10 a.m. All games are at Norbrock Stadium.
