The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team has found their new head coach, announcing the hiring of Goran Nogic this morning (May 15).
Nogic, who was most recently the executive director and head coach of the 3D Basketball Academy in North Vancouver, comes to Kamloops looking to fill some big shoes: previous head coach Scott Reeves coached the WolfPack women for 13 years.
“The possibility to challenge and share my coaching philosophy at the university sports level was the main reason I wanted this position,” Nogic said in a release from TRU. “At the same time, I believe and I hope that together with the players, directors and all supporters of the program we can change the current status of WolfPack women’s basketball in the Canadian basketball community, as well as the chance to promote Kamloops as a sports city.”
Nogic is just the third coach in the program's history.
The 47-year-old native of Belgrade, Serbia will inherit a WolfPack roster that went 4-16 last season and has missed the Canada West playoffs in each of the last three years.
"Goran is a proven coach who has had team success at elite levels, and who has demonstrated an ability to get the most out of individual athletes," says TRU athletic director Curtis Atkinson in the release. "He is a true professional who has achieved a great deal throughout his career. Our committee was extremely impressed with his passion for the game, his confidence in being able to make a difference, and the fact that he is a lifelong learner.”
Nogic has professional coaching experience in Serbia and Portugal, winning the Portuguese Professional National League three times (2012, 2013 and 2014) and the U20 Portuguese National Championship three times (2008, 2012 and 2015). He also has been a guest coach at DePaul, UConn, Providence and Simon Fraser University.
With all that international experience, Nogic says the globe will be his recruiting ground.
“If an international player can add something to our program she will always be welcome," he says in a release.
