UPDATE: Fire near Cinnamon Ridge compost facility in 'mop-up stage'

1:15 p.m.

Kamloops Fire Rescue and other agencies are currently in the mop-up stage of a fire that started near the Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Sutherland says crews were called to what was initially a grass fire at 11:15 a.m.

"The fuels vary from greener dry grass to some heavy timber and that's where our biggest struggle is right now is," he says. "In the heavier timber, because we had some danger trees in there."

While it was an interface fire, no structures are being threatened. There was some concern for a barn early on.

Forestry crews have been requested to help deal with those trees, he adds.

The fire is contained currently, although there is some concern wind could pick up, so crews are monitoring the situation closely, with 32 people on the ground from multiple agencies, including the B.C. Wildfire Service and crews from the Kamloops Airport.

"As long as the conditions stay as they are right now, we do feel we have it 100 per cent contained at this time," he says.

The cause of the fire hasn't been confirmed, Sutherland adds. He's also reminding people to remain vigilant.

"We're not in extreme danger rating right now and we're seeing things like this already."

12:10 p.m.

It appears the fire has stopped spreading. A statement from Kamloops Fire Rescue is coming in about half an hour.

Around 20 firefighters attended the scene, with most coming from the city's crew, but a handful coming from the Kamloops Airport.

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews are on the scene and fighting the fire which appears to be in the trees next to the compost facility.

11:40 a.m.

The B.C. Wildfire Service is not heading to the scene of the fire, currently. Fire information officer Nicole Bonnett says the wildfire service hasn't been notified about the fire and city crews haven't requested assistance.

11:30 a.m.

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews have been called out to reports of flames on the western edge of the city.

Reports came in around 11 a.m. this morning (June 19).

Crews are currently heading to an area west of the Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility and Yard Waste Site, which is on the northwestern border along the Thompson River.
