PHOTOS: New Kamloops off-leash dog park on North Shore opens

Dogs of the North Shore can shed leashes a little closer to home now that an off-leash area has opened up in McDonald Park.

What was once the outdoor pool at the park has been turned into a fenced-in area just for the city's furriest citizens. The area opened late last week.

Stacey Piraino lives nearby with her two dogs, Nakita and Loki, and says the new space is a big plus for the neighbourhood.

"Usually I take them to the Ord Road park because it's hard to handle two big dogs on leash," she says. "When they see another dog they get super excited so I usually need to take them somewhere I can take them off-leash."

While the trip to the Ord Road park is up to 15 minutes, the centrally located McDonald Park is a short walk for Piraino, who works shift work.

"It's nice to have a fenced-in area," she tells KamloopsMatters. "I come home to let my dogs out and now I can walk here on my break."

While the park opened a few days ago, it doesn't appear many people are using it yet.

"I just found out about it yesterday on my way to work," Piraino says. "This is my first time; I'm so excited. I can't believe there's no one else here."
