UPDATE: Bears leave McArthur Island, park reopens

McArthur Island Park has reopened, according to the latest update from the City of Kamloops.

The bears have left the area; however, locals are encouraged to be mindful of the animals and keep their distance.

"All residents are reminded to pick up any fallen fruit and to secure and store garbage containers," says the city.

In a tweet, the city says the bruins are currently roaming around Schubert Drive.

The City of Kamloops has closed McArthur Island Park for the time-being while it waits for a family of bears (a mother and her two cubs) to leave the area.

In a press release issued Monday afternoon (Aug. 19), the city says the mother bear has shown aggressive signs of behaviour.

"For the safety of the public and the three bears, the park will remain closed until the bears have moved on," reads the release.

Staff have closed the park entrances and the walking bridge.
