Kamloops Blazers swap picks for 20-year-old Raiders defenceman

Kamloops Blazers general manager Matt Bardsley has made another deal early in this WHL season, acquiring more blueline help for his club.

Today (Oct. 4), the team traded for 20-year-old defenceman Max Martin from the reigning league champion Prince Albert Raiders for a second and a sixth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

Both picks traded to Prince Albert are the Blazers picks for the upcoming draft.

“We are excited to add Max to the Blazers organization,” says Bardsley in a news release. “He is an offensive-minded defenceman, who can also play a sound defensive game. His hockey sense and puck skills are excellent and his game will add to a solid group of defenceman that we have here in Kamloops.”

The six-foot Martin scored six goals and 41 points in 59 games last year, adding another 10 points in his team's run to the Memorial Cup.

The Kamloops Blazers now have another move to make with four overage players on their roster. The WHL deadline to get down to three is next Thursday (Oct. 10). Along with Martin, 20-year-olds on the Blazers include newly acquired forward Ryan Hughes, team captain Zane Franklin and forward Kobe Mohr.

Martin is expected to make his debut with the Blazers this Saturday (Oct. 5), when they host the Everett Silvertips. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Sandman Centre.
