Kamloops Blazers team up with Gord Bamford to celebrate Memorial Cup anniversary

Feb. 21 and 22, 2020 has officially been proclaimed as the Kamloops Blazers Memorial Cup anniversary.

Next year marks 25 years since the local hockey team won the sought-after trophy.

To mark the occasion, the Blazers are inviting back alumni and management for a two-day celebration, which will include a show at the Sandman Centre by Canadian country music star Gord Bamford.

"The Kamloops Blazers have won the most memorial Cups of any WHL team and we wanted to take the opportunity to commemorate it by bringing the teams back who made it all happen," says team president and COO Don Moores in a news release.

The Blazers won the championship in 1984, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1995.

The anniversary weekend kicks off on Friday, Feb. 21, with Bamford and his #REDNEK Music Fest; other artists include platinum-selling Juno award winner Jess Moskaluke, JoJo Mason, Eric Ethridge, Andrew Hyatt, Cory Marks, Duane Steele and GhostBoy.

Bamford's son Nash was drafted to the Kamloops Blazers earlier this year.

"Kamloops has become a special place for me and my family. I'm honoured to kick off the Blazers Memorial Cup celebration with our amazing lineup of artists. You can't get more Canadian than country music and hockey," Bamford states in the release.

Tickets, which start at $39.50, go on sale on Oct. 25 on Ticketmaster.

The next day, on Feb. 22, Blazer alumni will attend a brunch honouring local people in uniform. Members of the legion, Anavets and the Rocky Mountain Rangers will be in attendance.

A few hours later, from 3 to 5 p.m., fans are invited to an autograph session with Blazer alumni. Some of the confirmed WHL greats are Bob Brown, Ken Hitchcock, Rob Brown, Greg Evtushevski, Tom Renney, Greg Hawgood, Shane Doan, Scott Niedermayer and more. The Memorial Cup and Digger will also be there.

The Kamloops Blazers will then face off that evening against the Calgary Hitmen, at 7 p.m.
