RCMP investigation into fatal downtown Kamloops crash continues

As Kamloops Mounties continue their investigation into this past weekend's fatal accident, one victim is recovering.

The crash at First Avenue and Battle Street involved two vehicles; one car, a red sedan, was full of current and former international students from Thompson Rivers University. While two in the car were declared dead at the scene, one young man is now in serious condition, according to Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. She tells KamloopsMatters his condition has been downgraded, from critical. The fourth passenger in the car escaped with non-life threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, Shelkie says the pickup truck involved in the crash wasn't reported stolen, but the investigation into who was driving it continues. After the crash occurred, the driver fled the scene on foot before police arrived.

The owner of the truck was arrested Sunday (Nov. 3), but was released later in the day. A residence on Fernie Place near Guerin Creek was searched in connection to the accident.

"We're gathering evidence and now we just have to process it to further our investigation," Shelkie says. "Our investigation moves as quickly as it can."

She adds some forensic techniques can take months.

Mounties are still looking for witnesses. If you saw anything on Sunday morning at 1:40 a.m., you can call the Kamloops RCMP detachment at 250-828-3000.
