TRU WolfPack defender goes third overall in CPL draft

Jan Pirretas Glasmacher will have a professional soccer career waiting for him once he finishes up at Thompson Rivers University, and he won't even have to leave the province to chase that dream.

The WolfPack defender was selected third overall by Victoria's Pacific FC in the Canadian Premier League’s U Sports draft Monday (Nov. 11).

“I was super excited when I found out,” says Glasmacher in a news release. “Not only is it great for me but it is great exposure for the WolfPack program."

He is the first player out of TRU taken in the CPL's U Sports Draft after none were selected in the inaugural proceedings last fall.

Glasmacher, a first-team Canada West all-star this season, was the first player taken from the conference after Cory Bent and Marcus Campanile from Cape Breton University went one and two.

“I am so excited for Jan,” says WolfPack head coach John Antulov in the release. “Not only is he a fantastic player but person as well. He has been massive for our program since we recruited him... For him to go as high as he did says a lot about Jan but also says a lot about our program.”

Glashmacher, who hails from Barcelona, has academy experience playing with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and the Blackburn Rovers in England. He originally came to North America to play NCAA Div. 1 with Virginia Tech, but was ruled ineligible because of his European pro academy background.

“He was the best overall available player in the draft, in our opinion,” Pacific FC CEO and GM Rob Friend told the Times Colonist. “He has that German football mentality and technical capability and were are really excited by him.”

Glashmacher will begin training with the team this spring. (U Sports underclassmen can play in the pro CPL through the spring and summer until the U Sports season begins, without losing their university eligibility.)

However, he is set to return to TRU next September for his fourth year of business studies and another season with the WolfPack.
