PHOTOS: North Kamloops park has some new mural art

The McDonald Park Neighbourhood Association's mural project has wrapped up.

The washroom building has been covered in bees, in honour of Kamloops' status as a bee city, by local artist Kelly Wright. The four sides have bees, honeycombs and flowers; on the side with doors to the washrooms, the women's side has a pink flower and the men's has a blue.

Wright's work has become well known around town in the last couple of years, with murals like the large bear downtown at Seymour Street and Third Avenue and a wall at the new Bright Eye Brewing location. 

The neighbourhood association took on the project this summer, in an effort to add more art to the park. It held a grand unveiling in September, when Wright had essentially finished the first building. The second, where the washrooms are, hadn't been started yet.

Earlier this year, the association's communications director Sarah Johnstone told KamloopsMatters the hope was to create a friendlier space with less graffiti.

"This park is used by lots of different user groups and there have been some people that have been vandalizing the buildings," she said. "We've had issues with drug usage in some of the buildings."

The neighbourhood association paid for the art via fundraising and corporate donations.
