UPDATE: Two suspects in custody after 'dynamic incident' in Falkland and Westwold

12:15 p.m.

A man and woman are in custody after firing shots and attempting to evade police in the Falkland and Westwold area this morning.

Police were notified of a suspicious vehicle in the area around 8 a.m., which set off a "dynamic incident," according to an RCMP news release.

"RCMP officers controlled access to the highway and strategically set up roadblocks in an attempt to safely stop the vehicle," says Cst. Jocelyn Noseworthy of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP detachment, in the release. "The driver failed to stop for police and allegedly fired shots from the vehicle as it fled from our officers, posing a serious risk to public safety."

A spike belt was set up and stopped the vehicle near Westwold. Out of an abundance of caution, RCMP ordered the lockdown of Westwold Elementary School, but it has since been lifted.

Highway 97 will remain closed between Falkland and Westwold as the scene is processed.

Police are not aware of any serious injuries as a result of today's events. No further information is being released at this time

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has video footage is asked to contact the North Okanagan RCMP at 250-546-3028.

10:26 p.m.

There are unconfirmed reports of shots fired.

Ian Milde tells Castanet he heard multiple shots fired and saw two people being arrested in a field in the Westwold area.

Monty Unrau says at 10 a.m. today, “Cops are spike belting the road. Running around with machine guns. They've got a guy who took shots at them in Westwold.”

Two people have posted on social media they heard 19 shots fired, but that has yet to be confirmed by RCMP.

10:17 a.m.

Drive BC is reporting the police incident has closed Highway 97 in Westwold, between Monte Lake and Falkland.

An assessment is in progress.

Unfortunately, there's no available detour.

10:07 a.m.

A witness has told Castanet about a heavy police presence in Falkland.

There are unconfirmed reports of multiple police vehicles, ERT members and a police helicopter in the area, but that has not been confirmed by police.

One resident said several police cars were spotted at the Falkand RCMP detachment, which is unusual for the community, located 30 minutes from Vernon on Highway 97.

Castanet will have more information as soon as it becomes available.

More to come...
