Kam-poops: The Lux Loo lavishes log-droppers with luxury lavatory

Four years ago, Michael Letterlough attended a friend's wedding down in the U.S. and was blown away, not by the venue, decor or the menu, but by the portable toilet.

"I pretty much asked him, 'Where's the restroom?' He pointed to a trailer and I walked into the most amazing bathroom I've ever seen in a trailer outside," he says.

Now, Letterlough is looking to introduce these classy commodes to outdoor events all around the B.C. Interior after launching the Lux Loo this fall.

"I just researched around Kamloops and the Okanagan to see if there's anyone doing it and there weren't too many competitors and I figured it would be a great idea to put this product out there," he tells KamloopsMatters.

Letterlough works in underground mining, but the "serial entrepreneur" thinks he's found the business that could become a full-time job and leave him flush with cash. After purchasing his own trailer from the States and with another unit on order, he's begun lining up jobs for the upcoming event season, with a focus on weddings.

"I never thought I would get into the bathroom business but I saw it was a necessity and a need for outdoor events," he says. "Me, personally, I hate porta-potties and my wife despises them. Especially for women that are dolled and dressed up, you don't want to be using a dirty porta-potty. So I thought this would work and they're really beautiful on the inside and that sparked my interest in getting into the business."

His outstanding outhouses are tailored for nature-based nuptials: they can handle around 190 guests, come with heating and air conditioning and the design team of Roxanne Letterlough and Chelsea Dionne will match the decor with the colour scheme of your event.

Because the washrooms are in a trailer, set up only takes about 15 minutes. And while power and water hookups are required for standard rentals, Letterlough is also offering an "off-the-grid package" that can run with a generator and 150 gallons of onboard freshwater.

The Lux Loo is planning on servicing any events that are within a five-hour radius of Kamloops. And if the demand is there, Letterlough may be expanding to bigger bathrooms for festivals and the like.

"Right now, it's all about building traction and getting the word out. A lot of the times, when I speak to people, they don't even realize this exists and especially when they see the pictures of how nice it is inside, they're blown away that you could even do that in a trailer."

Looking to make a splash with these amenities, he's been attending wedding expos around the Interior. In fact, the Lux Loo will be at the Kamloops Bridal Show this weekend if you'd like to learn more.
