Kamloops temperature could reach high teens next week

Warm weather on the way

With arctic air still flowing through Kamloops, it might be nice to know next week will be significantly warmer.

Environment Canada is expecting temperatures to be as low as -8 C on Saturday, but warm to 17 C by Tuesday.

Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says there's more of that on the way.

"It could be in the high teens or pushing 20 C for early next week," he tells Castanet.

"It'll be good to get a bit of Vitamin D," he adds.

The quick turnaround is due to a shift from where the weather is coming from (currently, the Yukon and Arctic). It's also because the sun is constantly getting higher.

"There's so much power in the sun, we heat right up," Lundquist says, noting that the sun's angle in the sky can affect how much energy reaches us.

If the sun gets above 30 degrees, it's able to burn off more of the cloud cover.

"Once it gets there, the low cloud doesn't stand a chance," he says.

That means higher highs.

While 18 C or 19 C sounds warm now, the average for the first week of April is between 14 C and 15 C. Lundquist says that once this cool period passes, the seasonal forecast for Kamloops shows average or above-average temperatures.

"In the later part of April and into May, we'll be getting into warmer-than-average," he says, adding that in his opinion, climate change will tip it enough that the next three months will be above average.
