A Way Home Kamloops leader receives 'Heart of the Grasslands'

Social worker recognized

A Way Home Kamloops executive director Katherine McParland is being recognized for her hard work in the youth homelessness sector.

McParland is this year's recipient of the Heart of the Grasslands award, given each year by the Thompson Nicola branch of the BC Association of Social Workers. The annual award recognizes exemplary contributions to the community.

She was presented with the award Wednesday.

"Those who know Katherine, know of her outstanding ability to engage youth with lived expertise in program development, policy development, and change,” said association president Michael Crawford in a press release. 

“She recognizes the necessity of a 'whole community' solution to end youth homelessness and has been successful in engaging with all sectors."

McParland has be integral in a variety of initiatives in Kamloops, including local youth homeless counts and the recent 'Safe Suites' which began operation late last year.
