Drive-thrus aren't just for picking up a Big Mac, fries and a large Coke.
They're also for supporting charities.
Giesbrecht & Associates IG Private Wealth Management is organizing a "stop, drop and donate" drive-thru event next month for the Kamloops Hospice Association.
The COVID-19 pandemic has meant a decrease in funds for the local non-profit. Its thrift store had to temporarily close and its annual gala had to be cancelled. In an earlier interview with Castanet, executive director Wendy Marlow said staff need to raise $1.2 million every year to maintain operations, including running the 12-bed Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home.
"We know the hospice plays an incredible role in the community for everyone, doesn’t matter who you are," says drive-thru organizer Marilyn Giesbrecht. "I know 250 some odd people come through their doors every year; that’s a lot of people so we want to makes sure that continues on."
It's also personal for Giesbrecht. She accessed hospice in 2011, when her husband had a three-week stay before he passed.
The experience was like no other, she says.
"It was nice for my kids, it was pleasant, it was homey, it wasn’t medical. It was so nice. We had family gatherings, friends could come in, we could still make dinner together," she recalls.
The hospice drive-thru wish list includes:
- Kleenex
- Paper towel
- Toilet paper
- Keurig coffee pods
- Pop
- Juices - orange/apple
- Baking supplies - walnuts/raisins
- Soups - tomato/mushroom
- Broths - chicken/beef
- Biotene mouthwash
The bigger asks are:
- Touchless ice machine ($8,500)
- Invacare sit-to-stand patient lift ($5,000)
Gift certificates and monetary donations (cash or cheque) will be accepted as well.
The drive-thru event at 100-741 Sahali Terrace, where Giesbrecht & Associates IG Private Wealth Management is located, is set for Saturday, July 11. It'll run between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Donations will be collected in a socially distant manner.
