Fundraiser for Sun Peaks photographer fighting cancer raises $19k

$19k raised for photographer

A GoFundMe campaign for a local photographer and filmmaker has nearly reached $19,000.

Kyle James launched the campaign earlier this month as he prepared for chemotherapy to fight cancer. He was diagnosed in October of last year, had emergency surgery and been told it was successful.

"Since then, I have been monitored and receiving frequent scans and blood tests, all of which were encouraging until my most recent followup (May 2020)," he writes on his campaign page. "This new scan showed areas of concern where metastasis was forming and it emerged that this area of concern had been present all along,  overlooked, and developing in length since my surgery in October 2019."

After that discovery, it was decided chemotherapy was the best course of action.

"My doctor anticipates that I will do well through the treatment as I am ‘young and fit’ with an estimated 90-95% chance of full, healthy recovery following the chemotherapy treatment," he writes.

A self-employed photographer and filmmaker, he's had to stop working due to the situation. His partner, Malina, is working and caring for him at the same time.

Since launching the campaign on June 18, he's been able to raise more than $18,700. He writes that the money will go to medication, and to cover regular bills like rent and related costs. The campaign page is here.
