Three homes catch fire in Rayleigh

3 fires in Rayleigh

UPDATE: 4:59 p.m.

It's unknown at this hour if the fires are related, according to the latest update from Kamloops RCMP.

In a news release, police say all occupants of the Aspen Park and Reighmount homes are accounted for.

UPDATE 4:35 p.m.

Fire crews have now mostly extinguished all three structure fires in the Kamloops neighbourhood of Rayleigh.

Resident of Aspen Park Drive Jodie Holtby says she looked out her front window around 2:15 p.m. to see orange flames shooting out of the garage of the home across the street.

“The garage door was open, we ran across with hoses and phoned 911,” she said, adding the fire “went really fast.”

“There were a lot of things blowing up and it jumped next door to the neighbours house.”

Holtby says they managed to retrieve most of the animals from the burning homes. Neighbours says a dog may have perished in the fire, but that remains unconfirmed by firefighters. No people were hurt.

Holtby said she did not see what started the fire. She added there is a small brown dog named “Ruby” that escaped from one of the burning houses that is still running the neighbourhood.

Shortly after the first two homes caught fire, a third home was ablaze a short distance away on Reighmount Drive.

A news release from the Kamloops Fire Department said the causes of the fires remain under investigation.

“Crews responded quickly to contain the fires and prevent further spread, and are working to extinguish the flames,” fire chief Michael Adams said.

“Residents are asked to avoid the area and obey all crews on site. KFR would also like to remind residents that Kamloops is drying out and to practice fire safety this weekend.”

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.

Three separate houses are on fire in the Kamloops neighbourhood of Rayleigh.

Emergency crews were called to the first fire on Aspen Park Drive at roughly 2:20 p.m.

A Castanet reporter at the scene says two of the homes that caught fire are next to each other on Aspen Park Drive while the third fire is a few streets over.

The fires have drawn large crowds of residents into the streets to watch the fire crews work.
