Affordable rental homes are under construction in Kamloops

Building affordable homes

Affordable rental homes are under construction in Kamloops with the help of British Columbia's 10-year housing plan.

Sixty new affordable rental homes are under construction at 445 5th Avenue. The four-storey, wood-frame building will provide affordable homes for individuals, families, seniors, and people with disabilities, including those living with mental-health challenges. It's a result of the partnership between the Province, the City of Kamloops and the John Howard Society of the Thompson Region (JHSTR).

Rent will range from roughly $710 for a studio, $805 for a one-bedroom and $920 for a two-bedroom unit. This is $300 a month less than they would have been without the province's $10 million contribution. These units will be managed by JHSTR, a non-profit with experience in affordable housing and working with people living with mental-health issues.

"The City of Kamloops is excited to see construction starting on this project, which will support residents with a variety of needs," says Dieter Dudy, deputy mayor, City of Kamloops. "The city and our partners have been working hard to increase the supply of affordable housing in our community and it's great to be seeing the results of those efforts."

The City provided the land for this building, valued at roughly $1.2 million, along with $145,000 in municipal waivers.

The move-in date is expected to be in early 2022.
