Man charged in 2019 Valentine's Day robbery in Kamloops pleads guilty to three counts

Armed robber pleads guilty

One of three men charged in a February 2019 robbery-turned-kidnapping in Kamloops has pleaded guilty.

Justin Daniels appeared in BC Supreme Court Wednesday (Aug. 12), where he pleaded guilty to using a firearm to commit a robbery, using a firearm to kidnap and robbery.

On Feb. 15, 2019, Kamloops RCMP said two men and one woman were robbed by two men with firearms during the early morning hours of Valentine's Day in downtown Kamloops. All parties were linked to the local drug trade.

At the time, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said after the robbery, the suspects took the woman against her will in one of the other victim's vehicles.

The victim's stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in an area near Barnhartvale Road and Highway 97. The investigation led police to an address in Kelowna, on Bernard Avenue. The kidnapped woman was not there but one of the robbery suspects was arrested. The woman was located the following day (Feb. 15) in a vehicle going from Kelowna to Kamloops. RCMP stopped the vehicle, which contained firearms, near Falkland.

Daniels, along with Michael Mathieson and Robert Rennie, were charged in the case.

Daniels will be sentenced on Sept. 21, 2020. Mathieson continues to go through the justice system while Rennie is on the lam. Both face similar charges.
