COVID-19 emergency layoff period ending soon

Deadline for businesses

The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce is reminding non-unionized businesses to apply for the temporary layoff variance before Aug. 25.

The COVID-19 emergency layoff deadline will end on Aug. 30, 2020 and the chamber is asking any non-unionized businesses that want to extend it to apply for a variance under the Emergency Standards Act.

"Without a variance, the employer-employee relationship is severed if the employer doesn’t recall employees on temporary layoff before Aug. 30," the chamber says in a press release. "Eligible employees may be entitled to compensation (severance) for length of service under the Employment Standard act."

To submit your application, follow these steps:

1. Survey your workforce using the provided template and tool on the Employment Standards Branch website to ensure support of more than 50 per cent of employees affected by the variance.

2. Complete the online application and upload your employees’ responses.

Businesses can find resources in-person at Service BC, by calling 1-833-236-3700, or by email.

The chamber is hosting a virtual Q&A on Aug. 17 (2 p.m.) to answer any questions. Register here.
