Office supporting potential Ajax Mine opens in Kamloops

Ajax office opens

An office has opened to support the work being done to restart the Ajax Mine site.

KGHM and Abacus Mining, the two companies who own the project, hired an overseer for the project in September. Now they're announcing an office has opened, to help support work consulting local First Nations, government and communities.

The site has been dormant for years; in 2017 an attempt by KGHM and Abacus to restart mining there was rejected when provincial regulators declined an environmental certificate.

"Despite this setback, KGHM in consultation with Abacus has continued to work to advance the project, including evaluating various strategies geared toward potentially resubmitting the environmental application," states Abacus in a press release.

The site was an active mining site for decades; it was last active in the 1990s. More recently it featured on an episode of Amazing Race Canada.
