BC Wildlife Park cancels in-person Wildlights; staff working on virtual experience

Wildlights cancelled

The BC Wildlife Park has announced it's cancelling Wildlights 2020 following Monday's news that social gathering restrictions will be extended into January 2021

However, staff are working with Aspect Film Works to bring a virtual Wildlights experience to locals.

"The update that we were hoping to not have to give you: Unfortunately, for the first time in 22 years we have to cancel Wildlights," the park wrote on their Facebook page Tuesday morning (Dec. 8).

Wildlights would have kicked off this Friday (Dec. 11).

The post notes staff briefly considered a drive-thru event.

"However, the well-being of the wildlife in our care remains our first priority. With the pathways and their close proximity to our wildlife, a drive-through event would be disruptive to many of the animals."

The first two dates of Wildlights were already sold out, the statement continues, "with many more nearly sold out."

The park says refunds will be automatically processed through Eventbrite, over the next few days.

"To those who have asked us to not refund your tickets as you wish to donate the proceeds to the park, we thank you for your generosity! All tickets will be automatically be refunded; however, if you wish to support us, please visit https://www.bcwildlife.org/support-us.htm for a list of ways you can support the BC Wildlife Park during this difficult time."

Another idea tossed around is having a "Wildights Take II" in January or February. Staff are interested in hearing from the public if they'd attend Wildlights in the new year, should restrictions ease by then.

"Wildlights has been a staple tradition within the Kamloops community, and we will miss seeing everyone this holiday season," staff say.
