Kamloops woman rows to raise money for cardiac care at RIH

Rowing for hearts

Tara Sales is taking a literal approach to making sure there are no broken hearts this Valentine’s season.

The Kamloops local is not only the head trainer at Orange Theory Fitness, but is looking to raise money to create the Coronary Care Unit at the Royal Inland Hospital (RIH).

On Saturday, Feb. 20 for every dollar raised, Sales will row one meter, with the hope to raise $20,0000.

“The Echocardiogram machine costs $300,000 and we are $50,000 short right now,” Sales told Castanet Kamloops.

Since the RIH does not have this machine currently, patients such as Sales have to be transported to other hospitals in the region.

Sales had open heart surgery back in 2018, and when presented with the opportunity to help raise funds, she jumped at it.

“I had to be airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital,” Sales said, emphasizing the need of this unit in Kamloops.

“One-thousand patients get transported, by either ambulance or airlifted to other hospitals because we don’t have the equipment needed to treat them.”

Sales is inviting people to row along with her, donate funds, and watch on the Facebook Live.
