Sun Peaks program looks to fundraising to stay open for 2021-22 season

Sun Peaks Resort will continue its fundraising efforts for the Adaptive Sports program.

Setting a goal of raising $10,000, the program is designed to help those with physical and cognitive disabilities learn to snowboard and ski.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people, both young and old, who need to be engaged and physically active. For people with physical and cognitive disabilities, options for exercise and outdoor activities can been limited by resources,” said Nicolas Riopel, the program manager of the Adaptive Sports at Sun Peaks.

Volunteers and specialized equipment make this program possible, giving those who normally would not be able to have this experience the chance to participate in these sports.

“Many of our students return year after year to participate in this rewarding program,” said Riopel.

The program relies on fundraising to train instructors as well as to purchase more specialized equipment, similar to the sit-ski purchased last year.

“This ski enabled students normally confined to a wheelchair to enjoy the freedom and fun on the snow," said Riopel.

The program is also seeking instructors, as lessons usually need two instructors per one student.

“The program has been so successful we are hoping to expand it to other sports in the future,” said Riopel.

As for donations, Adaptive Sports take cash donations, has an account at Consignor Sports and has three General Grant recycling sites in Kamloops.
