A special kind of dog service has come to the city of Kamloops.

ElderDog Canada Inc., a national non-profit organization helps seniors in the community care for their dogs.

Whether it be walking them, taking the pets to veterinarian appointments or re-housing animals, the community-based program is here to help in whatever capacity makes it easier on elders.

“The loving bond between dogs and their human families can be particularly strong as both enter their senior years. However, older owners can find it increasingly difficult to provide their dog with the exercise, stimulation and other care required. With the onset of COVID-19, the challenge is even greater,” Tianna Smidt, the Pawd leader for the Thompson Okanagan ElderDog group said in a press release.

The program screens dedicated volunteers and has branches in eight provinces.

They also have organizations in Vancouver, Nabaimo, Victoria and the Sunshine Coast.

“With its arrival to the Thompson-Okanagan area, ElderDog is ready to fulfil its mission to ‘Help Keep Love in the Home’,” Smidt announced.

“If you are a senior dog owner who requires assistance in caring for your companion, or if you are interested in volunteering to assist in its work, you can find out more information at www.elderdog.ca, or by calling 1-855-336-4226.”
