Open burning restrictions coming to Kamloops Fire Centre next week

Fire restrictions coming

Open burning restrictions will go into place in the Kamloops Fire Centre next week.

Effective noon on June 11, category two and three open fires in addition to other activities will be banned in the region including the Thompson-Okanagan, Similkameen, Shuswap and upper Fraser Canyon.

Specifically, prohibited activities will include:

  • Category 2 open fires;
  • Category 3 open fires;
  • Fireworks;
  • Sky lanterns and,

Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, except when used for a campfire.

These prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre jurisdiction, although local bylaws and bans supersedes provincial rules.

This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes.

Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150.
