Planned ignitions underway at massive wildfire in South Cariboo

Flat Lake ignitions go ahead

Planned ignitions are underway at a massive wildfire burning in the South Cariboo.

The BC Wildfire Service says the controlled burn at the Flat Lake wildfire is taking place on the northwest corner of the fire.

It will remove fuels between the fire perimeter and predetermined control lines.

“This tactic will bring the fire's edge to more accessible locations where ground crews can safely deliver water. Aviation support will be utilized throughout the day,” BCWS said.

The Flat Lake wildfire is currently just under 40,000 hectares in size and is expected to exhibit increased activity as temperatures climb over the next two days.

On the east flank of the fire, crews have been making progress on control lines and are targeting hot spots found during an aerial scan on Wednesday.

To the west, heavy equipment has completed a guard system along Gustafsen Nielson road.

The fire remains active on its south flank and grew some Wednesday in the Southwest. Crews are assessing plans for machine guards.

The fire is still very active from Highway 97 and has resulted in several evacuation orders and alerts, including alerts for the communities of 100 Mile House, 70 Mile House and Green Lake.
