Auditors' report into TNRD spending delayed until later this fall

TNRD probe report delayed

A third-party audit of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s financial records will be delayed until later this fall, according to the district’s CAO.

During the TNRD board of directors meeting on Thursday, Scott Hildebrand said BDO Canada is now planning to bring forward a final report by the end of October or November.

Hildebrand said in June the TNRD was expecting a draft report from BDO’s forensic audit team in August, with a full transparent report to follow shortly after.

“There is a tremendous amount of data and records to view and analyze,” he said.

“The scope of the work has also been extended, something we always said could happen if recommended by BDO. We will still honour our commitment to transparency and will provide a summary of the auditors' findings presented and made public, to the extent we are legally able to, keeping in mind some of the limitations we have around privacy legislation.”

BDO Canada was selected through an RFP process to provide an independent forensic audit of the TNRD’s financial records and expenses.

The audit was requested by the TNRD after a Kamloops This Week investigation shone a spotlight on the spending habits of former regional district CAO Sukh Gill, who spent taxpayer money on costly dinners, drinks and lavish gifts while he was with the district.

He left his job with the TNRD under murky circumstances in early 2020.

The TNRD has turned over some information to the police, as well. Mounties are looking into allegations of financial improprieties within the regional district, also stemming from KTW's reporting.
