Police watchdog called on to investigate fatal motorcycle crash Sunday in Valleyview

IIO probing fatal collision

A fatal motorcycle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway on Sunday in Valleyview is now being probed by B.C.’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigations Office announced Monday it was investigating the crash, which involved a motorcycle and a pickup truck at about 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The collision took place in the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highland Road. The motorcycle driver, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the IIO, initial information suggests the motorcycle driver ran a red light and struck the truck. The motorcycle passed a police vehicle a short time before the collision and police were on scene almost immediately.

The highway was closed in Valleyview for hours, only reopening at about 4:15 a.m.

The IIO, a civilian-led police watchdog, is called upon to investigate incidents involving death or serious harm during interactions with police.
