Junior mining company fined for monitoring violation

Mining company fined

A junior mining company behind a project near Kamloops has been fined for monitoring infractions, according to the provincial government.

WestKam Gold Corp. operates the Bonaparte Gold Project about 50 kilometres north of Kamloops. The company has been fined for failing to conduct regular water sampling and other monitoring at the site, according to Environmental Compliance BC.

According to the province, WestKam received two administrative penalties totalling $15,600 for failing to comply with its discharge permit.

The penalties were issued in late August.

“They failed to conduct quarterly monitoring, including the collection of flow measurements and water samples, at all required locations throughout 2019, 2020 and Q1 of 2021,” Environmental Compliance BC’s website states.

“They also failed to submit annual reports for the 2018 and 2019 calendar years, however, submitted an annual report for the 2020 calendar year.”

WestKam Gold Corp., a Vancouver-based exploration company, conducted drilling and bulk sampling programs on the 2,461 hectare Bonaparte property between 2013 and and 2018, according to the company’s website.
