Watchdog recommends assault charge against city Mountie

Mountie might face charges

B.C.’s police watchdog is recommending charges against a Kamloops Mountie involved in an arrest in Brocklehurst last year left a man with serious injuries.

Police were called to a report of an altercation in a home in the 1000-block of Newton Street at about 10:45 p.m. on June 23, 2020. Initial information was that a firearm was involved.

Mounties arrived and ordered everyone out.

“A 40-millimetre less-lethal round and police service dog were used to arrest one man when he exited, and he sustained serious injuries,” reads a bulletin released Wednesday by B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office, the province’s civilian-led police watchdog agency.

A review of all the information by the IIO determined reasonable grounds exist to believe an officer committed a criminal offence relating to use of force.

The IIO said it has forwarded a report to Crown counsel for charge approval.
