Rear-end collision leads to string of charges against city man

Minor crash leads to charge

A Kamloops man is facing a raft of charges after a rear-end collision in a busy downtown intersection led police down a rabbit hole, Mounties say.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Battle Street and Columbia Street in the downtown core at about 7:15 a.m. on Saturday for a report of a minor two-vehicle collision involving a Kia hatchback and a Honda CRV.

“As part of their response, police discovered the Kia had been reported stolen, which led officers into a deeper investigation and revealed other criminal offences,” RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn said in a news release.

A 28-year-old Kamloops man is now facing charges of breaking and entering, obstructing a peace officer, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possessing identity documents without lawful excuse, theft of motor vehicle and breach of probation.

Layton Maclaren is expected in Kamloops provincial court for a bail hearing on Thursday.
