City man who filmed child porn with toddler he was babysitting gets four-year prison sentence

Jail for child porn babysitter

A Kamloops man who was caught with child pornography last year, including a “disturbing” video he filmed with a three-year-old girl he was babysitting, has been ordered to spend four years in federal prison.

The 67-year-old man cannot be identified under a court-ordered publication ban put in place to protect the identity of the young girl. He was sentenced in B.C. Supreme Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty in April to charges of sexual interference, possession of child pornography and producing child pornography.

Court heard the man came to the attention of police after someone he knew looked through his cellphone in March of 2020 and found troubling images. When Mounties seized the phone and searched it, they found images and videos of child pornography — including some that the man had filmed of himself sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl he was babysitting.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Dennis Hori called the offences “disturbing.”

A psychiatric assessment labelled the man a low risk to reoffend.

In addition to the jail time, the man was ordered to supply a sample of his DNA to a national criminal database and to register as a sex offender for life.

Once he gets out of jail, he will be prohibited for 10 years from going near the girl, using social media or communicating with any children online.

The man had been free on bail. His four years began on Tuesday.
