Posters supporting TDOR were burned by students at Valleyview Secondary

LGBTQ+ posters burned

School District 73 says it is investigating after posters promoting a LGBTQ+ event were burned at a Kamloops school.

On Nov. 17, posters promoting a vigil in honour of Transgender Day of Remembrance at Valleyview secondary were burned on school grounds by a group of students.

SD73 said in a written statement it supports Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“Our school district supports the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is an annual observance on Nov. 20 that honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence,” the statement said, adding that the district is working with the individuals involved in the incident.

“Our main priority is that all students feel safe and are accepted for who they are. While we cannot speak of the specific details of who was involved and what the outcome of the investigation is, incidents like this impact our entire community and we take them very seriously.”
