Kamloops man admits he hid dynamite, bombs and guns inside storage unit

Dynamite, bombs seized

A Kamloops man who was busted last year hiding four sticks of dynamite, two bombs and a half-dozen guns inside a storage locker will learn his fate in February.

Brett Kiichi Haynes, 45, pleaded guilty in B.C. Supreme Court on Tuesday to three firearms-related charges and one count of possessing explosives.

Court heard Mounties executed a search warrant on a unit at a storage facility on the Tk’emlups reserve on June 10, 2020.

Crown prosecutor Anthony Varesi said the police search turned up six guns — a loaded .223-calibre semi-automatic, a carbine rifle, a bolt-action rifle, a .30-30 lever-action rifle, a .22-calibre handgun and a 20-gauge shotgun — as well as four sticks of dynamite and two improvised explosive devices.

Varesi said an assortment of ammunition was also found in the storage unit.

“After the officers completed the search of the storage locker, the accused arrived in a taxi and was arrested,” he said.

“He had in his possession a key for a padlock that opened the storage locker.”

Court heard Haynes was bound by five separate firearms prohibitions at the time of his arrest.

Haynes’ trial on eight charges had been slated to get underway on Tuesday when he entered surprise guilty pleas. The remaining counts will be stayed by the Crown after Haynes is sentenced.

Sentencing will take place in February. Haynes, who has a lengthy criminal record and has previously been on the Kamloops RCMP's list of prolific offenders, remains behind bars.
