New cross country ski trail set to open in Aberdeen, City of Kamloops says

City set to open new ski trail

A new cross-country ski track will be opening soon at an Aberdeen park, according to the City of Kamloops.

The one kilometre trail is located at West Highlands Park, and will loop around soccer fields and the community centre.

The city said it is set to open on Friday — dependent on weather conditions — and will be free for anyone to use.

“We’re excited for people to have an opportunity to get outside, be active, and enjoy the season,” said Jeff Putnam, the city’s parks and civic facilities manager in a statement.

“Keeping it free means it can be enjoyed by everyone.”

According to the city, the Aberdeen location was chosen due the availability of the park land and because of its high elevation, as it is likely to receive more snowfall.

According to the city, parks personnel will use specialty track-setting equipment to set the trail for classic or skate-style skiing.

The trail will be unsupervised, and open seven days per week depending on snow conditions.

The washroom at West Highlands Community Centre will be open daily all winter according to the city.

The city said it is planning to reopen the trail annually around the park, depending on snow and weather conditions.
