City of Kamloops warns residents to watch out for rising water levels

Watch for rising water: city

The City of Kamloops is warning residents to keep an eye on rising water levels this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the south Thompson region, suggesting conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain.

Waterways in and around region are already rising and water volume and speed can change rapidly with snow melt and increased precipitation.

“It’s easy to underestimate the power of rushing water, and we want to make sure residents stay safe this spring,” said Ryan Cail, deputy fire chief. “Flooded creeks and streams are unpredictable. Even though the surface water may be smooth, the water is moving very fast. Never attempt to drive or walk in flood water.”

The warning also indicates that six inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult and two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks.

"Residents experiencing localized flooding or water issues are advised to call 250-828-3461," Cail says.

Sand and sandbags are available at fire stations throughout Kamloops and the city will continue to provide updates on water levels and flood preparation activities as necessary.
