Suspect shot and killed near Savona following alleged abductions

Cops kill kidnapping suspect

UPDATE: 3:22 p.m.

Police shot and killed a suspect Sunday near Walhachin after an alleged kidnapping involving a woman and a child.

Mounties were first alerted to the situation just before 5:30 p.m. when a woman called 911 from a vehicle asking for help. A short time later, a second caller reported a vehicle driving erratically on the Trans-Canada Highway and a woman trying to escape.

A third caller then phoned 911 to report a family member and child had been abducted. Mounties have not said where the abduction took place.

“Shortly before 9 p.m., officers attended a rural property after receiving a report of the original suspect vehicle near a trailer, and established a roadblock before calling the emergency response team,” RCMP spokeswoman Dawn Roberts said in a news release.

Roberts said ERT officers attended and took over containment.

“After 3 a.m., the male suspect then reportedly exited the trailer with a weapon and a child,” she said.

“During the engagement with officers, the man was shot and killed. The child was uninjured and a woman was subsequently located with non-life-threatening injuries inside the trailer.”

A short time later, police attended the suspect’s home and found a second woman bound and injured inside.

Both women were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the initial incidents and B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office, the province’s police watchdog agency, is probing the police shooting.

RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said she was unable to provide any information due to the IIO investigation.

“I have heard from Kamloops RCMP with respect to a police incident in Savona,” she said.

“We are not in a position to comment at this time as there is an active IIO investigation.”

The IIO is an arm’s-length watchdog agency called in to investigate any instances in which a person in B.C. suffers death or serious injury as a result of an interaction with police.

Castanet Kamloops has asked the IIO for information about what happened.
