City of Kamloops opening two cooling centres during heat wave

It's going to be hot in the coming days, like it was during RibFest when this melted ice cream cone was found abandoned on a concrete barrier in the Riverside Park parking lot.

The City of Kamloops is opening two cooling centres over the next couple of days to provide residents with relief from soaring temperatures.

According to a news release from the city, the cooling centres will be located at the concourse at Sandman Centre, at 300 Lorne Street, and Parkview Activity Centre, at 500 McDonald Avenue.

Both centres will open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and will operate daily until the heat event ends. The city said the end of the heat wave is expected on Thursday.

“In the Interior Health region, a heat warning is issued when daytime temperatures are above 35 C for two consecutive days and overnight temperatures remain above 18 C,” the city said.

“These continued high temperatures put many vulnerable populations at risk of heat-related illnesses, including the elderly, infants and young children, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, and people experiencing homelessness.”

The city encouraged residents to check in on neighbours, friends and family members who may need help during the heat wave.

According to Environment Canada, a heat warning is in effect this week for the South Thompson, among other areas in the province.

“A strong ridge of high pressure will bring a short-lived heat wave to British Columbia,” said a statement from the weather agency.

Environment Canada predicts unsettled weather and cooler temperatures starting on Friday, but in the meantime, encouraged people to drink water, seek out cool places and schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.

“Environment Canada and local Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions,” the statement said.

According to the City of Kamloops, outdoor heat relief options are also available, including water parks and drinking fountains with potable water available in neighbourhoods around the city.
