Crowded fields set in race for Kamloops mayor, city council

Ballot set for October vote

The field is set for next month’s municipal election, with more than three dozen people having put their names forward seeking seats at city hall and on the local school board.

Five people are seeking the mayor’s chair, while another 23 are running for eight seats on city council. Eleven candidates declared for five Kamloops seats on SD73’s board of education.

Ray Dhaliwal, Dieter Dudy, Reid Hamer-Jackson, Sadie Hunter and Arjun Singh are looking to replace Mayor Ken Christian, who will not seek re-election. Dudy, Hunter and Singh are currently on city council, meaning there will be plenty of turnover at city hall.

Jamie Allen, Dale Bass, Nancy Bepple, Bonnie Cleland, George Dersch, Dennis Giesbrecht, Mac Gordon, Kelly Hall, Stephen Karpuk, Caroline King, Francois Lambert, Darrell LaRiviere, Margot Middleton, Daphane Nelson, Katie Neustaeter, Mike O’Reilly, Jordan Proctor, Reo, Jesse Ritcey, Taj Sandur, Bill Sarai, Darpan Sharma and Randy Sunderman will be on the ballot for city council, according to the city’s declaration of candidates, which was filed with Elections BC on Friday afternoon.

Bass, O’Reilly and Sarai are the only incumbents running for council. Bepple served on council between 2008 and 2014.

In the race for city seats on the SD73’s board of education, Marian Anderberg, Shahriar Behmanesh, Heather Grieve, Cole Hickson, Jimmy Johal, Jo Kang, Kathleen Karpuk, Darrell LaRiviere, John O’Fee, Karla Pearce and Jennifer Rowse are seeking Kamloops trustee positions.

Grieve, Karpuk and O’Fee are incumbents.

LaRiviere is running for both council and school board. He is the only local candidate seeking multiple offices.

Three would-be candidates who said they planned to run for city council did not file their paperwork by Friday’s deadline — Corally Delwo, Norris Laitinen and Shantell Renner.

Voters will head to the polls on Oct. 15.

Between now and then, Castanet Kamloops will be running a series of Q&As with local candidates — beginning today with mayoral hopeful Arjun Singh. Follow us on social media and subscribe to our daily Kamloops email newsletter to stay up to date on the candidates and their campaigns.
