Get to know Kamloops mayor, council candidates at upcoming forums

Full slate of election forums

Kamloops residents who want to hear more from local mayoral or councillor hopefuls have several upcoming opportunities to learn about their platforms and ideas.

Election events will allow residents the opportunity to meet candidates and ask them questions.

There are six upcoming forums scheduled throughout late September and early October.

Council of Canadians Kamloops Chapter: Municipal Election Forum

The Council of Canadians’ Kamloops Chapter is hosting its outdoor municipal election forum at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. until noon.

The forum will be held in the Stuart Wood schoolyard. Residents are encouraged to come as early as 8 a.m. in order to meet the candidates in person.

According to a social media post from organizers, each attending mayoral and councillor candidate will have time to introduce themselves, and then mayoral candidates will take vetted questions from the audience.

Tourism Kamloops: Mayoral Forum

In a news release, Tourism Kamloops said it would be holding a mayoral forum on Monday, Sept. 26, which will be focused on a conversation around tourism and the longstanding partnership between Tourism Kamloops and the City of Kamloops.

Tourism Kamloops said mayoral candidates are invited to address one key question: “What are your top three tourism priorities that Tourism Kamloops and the City of Kamloops should work together on during your term as an elected official?”

The forum will be broadcast live on Tourism Kamloops’ social media channels.

Downtown Kamloops Seniors’ Election Forum

The Downtown Kamloops Seniors’ Election Forum will be held at Desert Gardens, at 540 Seymour St., on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., with the forum beginning at noon. The forum is designed to be accessible especially to seniors, but is open to all residents. Nancy Bepple, a councillor candidate in this year's election, will host the event — as she has in previous years.

The audience will be able to ask questions of mayoral and councillor candidates. In accordance with Desert Gardens’ COVID-19 protocols, attendees are asked to wear masks in common areas like the entrance hall.

CFJC-TV and Kamloops Chamber of Commerce Forum

Thompson Rivers University’s Grand Hall — located at 1055 University Dr. — will host this election forum, held on Tuesday, Oct 4.

Doors will open for networking at 6:15 p.m. and the forum will start at 7 p.m.

2022 Civic Election Forum

This forum, co-hosted by Kamloops This Week, CBC Radio Kamloops and Radio NL, will be held at TRU’s Grand Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.

A mayoral session will be followed by groups of councillor candidates who will answer questions from the public.

Canadian Home Builders’ Association Central Interior: Candidate Forum

This event, co-hosted by the Association of Interior Realtors, will be held at Columbo Lodge, located at 814 Lorne St., on Oct. 12.

Registration and networking will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner event will run until 9:00 p.m.

Those wishing to attend will need to register on the Home Builders’ Association website.
