Merritt city officials say smoke will be visible during controlled burns next week

Merritt Fire Rescue is slated to continue prescribed burn on Monday.

Merritt Fire Rescue will be burning about 100 hand piles of fuel next week in a controlled burn near the Nicola Valley city.

According to a statement from the City of Merritt, as part of a prescribed fuel management project, crews will continue their prescribed burns on Monday as conditions allow.

The city said the burns are necessary in order to reduce the overall wildfire risk to the community.

Smoke is expected to be visible in the Bench areas as crews process the piles.
