New School District 73 board of education sworn in Monday night

SD73's new board sworn in

The Kamloops-Thompson school district swore in its new board of education on Monday night, with nine trustees embarking on the start of a four-year term helming SD73.

The meeting originally slated to take place at the district office was held online due to road conditions following Sunday night's snowfall.

The meeting started off with SD73 secretary-treasurer Trina Cassidy swearing in each of the nine trustees individually.

Trustee Heather Grieve was acclaimed as board chair for a second term. Trustee Rhonda Kershaw will serve as vice-chair.

“I want to express my gratitude to my fellow trustees really for entrusting me with the the role of board chair for School District 73, Kamloops-Thompson,” Grieve said.

“It is a position that I don't take lightly. I recognize the importance of [the] position and I'm really honoured to have another opportunity to have that seat.”

Trustee Kathleen Karpuk was acclaimed as the board representative to the BC School Trustees Association provincial council and trustee John O’Fee was acclaimed as the representative for the BC Public Schools Employers Association.

Following the board elections, Grieve assigned the trustees with committees they will focus on for the next year.

Political newcomers trustee Jo Kang and trustee Cole Hickson were assigned the DPAC committee. Hickson will also focus on literacy and Kang on industry advisory.

Trustee Kathleen Karpuk will act as the liaison for CUPE.

Trustee Cara McKelvey will work as the chair for the policy committee, along trustees Kang and Karpuk.

The finance and planning committee is to be overseen by O’Fee alongside trustee Shelley Sim and trustee Diane Jules.

Jules will also be responsible for the Aboriginal committee and student advisory with the help of Sim.

Grieve and McKelvey were assigned to employee engagement.

The human resources committee will be handled by Grieve, O'Fee and Jules.

The board will meet next on Nov. 14.
