Temporary Yacht Club shelter now open 24 hours, operator says

Shelter now open 24 hours

A temporary shelter at the Yacht Club will operate on a 24-hour basis through the winter.

The Mustard Seed Kamloops, which stepped in to operate the temporary shelter earlier this month, has announced the shelter is now operating 24 hours a day. It had been running from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m.

According to the Mustard Seed, 19 full-time staff have been hired to operate the shelter. Security personnel will also maintain a presence at the facility.

“At the Mustard Seed, we believe everyone needs a warm, safe place to be, off the streets in from the cold winter weather,” Mustard Seed Kamloops Managing Director Kelly Thomson said in a news release.

“We have an amazing team of staff who have stepped in to make this possible.”

Located on River Street, the Yacht Club has 19 beds available for vulnerable people.

According to BC Housing, there are more than 200 shelter beds available in Kamloops including another temporary winter shelter at Stuart Wood, the Emerald Centre, the Mustard Seed’s outreach centre, Harbour House, Moira House and Merit Place.
