Part of former Fortune Motel demolished by work crews

Former motel torn down

Part of a former North Kamloops motel was torn down Thursday, believed to be part of the site’s transition into supportive housing.

What used to be known as the Fortune Motel is now Genesis Place, which welcomed its first residents in September.

The smaller of two buildings on the property was torn down on Thursday. Crews were working on Friday morning loading the rubble into trucks to be carried away.

BC Housing purchased the Fortune Motel, 654 Fortune Dr., in June 2021 as part of a plan to create dozens of supportive homes for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The facility’s opening was delayed a number of times, and BC Housing told Castanet Kamloops workers ran into flooding issues in the building that was torn down Thursday.

The smaller building was home to 12 units, while the larger building has 28 units, as well as amenity and programming space.

Castanet Kamloops has asked BC Housing for information about the building’s demolition and future plans for the site.
