House arrest cancelled, Kamloops man sent to jail after getting caught in FBI sting

Jailed following FBI sting

WARNING: This story contains information some readers might find disturbing.

A Kamloops man who violated the terms of his house arrest by sharing pornographic images with an undercover FBI agent has been ordered to spend more than six months in prison.

The 37-year-old man cannot be named under a court-ordered publication ban put in place to protect the identity of his ex and his daughter.

During a hearing Friday in Kamloops provincial court, he admitted to breaching the terms of his house arrest.

The man, who is also facing serious new charges in connection with the breach, was sentenced to nine months of house arrest on Nov. 2 after pleading guilty to two counts of publishing an intimate image without consent.

In that case, court heard the man shared graphic intimate videos of himself and his former wife on social media — including one in which she was unconscious and unconsenting.

Conditions of the man’s house arrest included terms limiting his internet use. The condition he admitted to breaching barred him from possessing or recording any image in which a person is nude or engaged in sexual activity.

Crown prosecutor Alexandra Janse said the man was caught in an FBI sting operation in which he shared pornographic material online with an undercover agent. No further details of the incident were disclosed in court.

As a result of the breach, Kamloops provincial court Judge Lorianna Bennett turned the man’s house arrest sentence into jail time. He has been in custody since Dec. 15 and has a little less than 200 days remaining on his sentence.

The man is facing five new charges in connection with the circumstances that led to the breach of his house arrest, including one allegation that he made child pornography with his own daughter and another that he administered “a stupefying or overpowering drug” to her in order to facilitate a sex offence, according to court documents.

He is also accused of possessing child pornography between Nov. 30 and Dec. 15 and accused of distributing it on Dec. 6.

The man is due back in court on Feb. 16 for arraignment on the new charges.
